A horrifying incident has sent shockwaves through Kolkata, as a first-year law student has accused two senior students and an alumnus of allegedly raping her on campus. The alleged crime, which occurred within the premises of a law college in south Kolkata, has drawn disturbing parallels to the tragic rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College last August. All three individuals accused in the current case have been apprehended.

The primary accused, Monojit Mishra (31), a former student and currently the South Kolkata district organizing secretary for the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), was presented before the Alipore court on Friday. Alongside him were the other two accused, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), both third-semester students at the college. The court has remanded all three to police custody until July 1.

The Allegation: A Chilling Account

Here's a breakdown of what is known so far about the alleged incident:

When and Where: The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, within the law college premises. The 24-year-old victim had gone to the college to complete formalities related to her examinations.

Forced Confinement and Advances: According to her complaint, she was initially waiting in the college union room when Mishra allegedly instructed that the gate be locked. Later that evening, he reportedly expressed romantic interest and made unwelcome advances, which she firmly rejected. She then claimed he forcibly assaulted her.

Desperate Pleas Ignored: In a harrowing account to the police, as reported by CNN-News18, the victim stated, “I denied and fought back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not listen." She further alleged that she even touched Mishra's feet, pleading for release, but he persisted. She also claimed that the other two accused stood by silently and watched the alleged assault unfold.

Filmed and Threatened: A police source informed PTI that the victim has alleged she was filmed during the alleged gang-rape. "She alleged that the accused threatened to release the footage on the internet if she talked. They also threatened to harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false cases," the source stated.

Location and Time: The victim was allegedly taken to a ground floor room of the college in the evening, where the assault continued until almost 10 PM. Police have since sealed the room, and forensic experts are gathering evidence.

Evidence and Investigation

Medical Confirmation: A senior official of Kolkata Police confirmed that findings from the victim’s medical examination support her allegation of gang-rape. "There is evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches on her body," an officer told PTI.

Mobile Phones Seized: Police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused as they investigate whether any footage was shared or forwarded to other numbers.

Political Outcry and Calls for Action

The alleged crime has ignited fierce reactions from opposition parties, leading to clashes with police outside the Kasba police station, which has jurisdiction over the area.

BJP's Condemnation: The West Bengal unit of the BJP sharply criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress, posting on X: “This is not an isolated incident. Under the TMC government, West Bengal has become a breeding ground for crimes against women. Rapes have become a daily horror, and the state machinery continues to fail its daughters.”

TMC's Response: The TMC also condemned the "tragic incident" on X, emphasizing the "urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments." The party further lamented, "It is extremely unfortunate that the @BJP4India Govt. at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented."

National Women's Commission Intervention: Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, which occurred on the evening of June 25, the National Women's Commission has demanded a detailed action taken report from the Kolkata Police within three days.

This horrific event has reignited crucial conversations about campus safety, violence against women, and the urgency of effective legal and social deterrents in West Bengal.
